With winter weather right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about safety and fall prevention. Here are a few tips:
- Identify Hazards: Remember in winter there are less daylight hours, which reduces visibility on walkways. Know where the sidewalk is uneven or cracked, and be careful of ice on the ground. Also keep in mind when people enter buildings, ice or snow may fall off their shoes and onto the floor where it melts, creating a slippery floor.
- Stock up on supplies: Purchasing ice melting supplies such as salt before it starts to snow helps avoid hassle and can better ensure your outdoor areas are properly treated to prevent slips and falls.
- Winterize shoes, boots, and assistive devices: Attach spikeless ice and snow shoe gripper sole covers to shoes, ice grip tips to canes, or choose shoes with rubber soles to maintain traction on slippery surfaces.
- Carry kitty litter for slick surfaces: A ziplock bag of lightweight kitty litter in your pocket can help if you encounter slick surfaces when you are out and about.
