Why Can’t I just have surgery? Wouldn’t that just solve the problem? Why should I try therapy?
These are questions I hear often when a patient has struggled with pain for a while and is frustrated. But the reality is that for many conditions, physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery in reducing pain and improving function and comes with fewer complications and costs. Some of the conditions where therapy has shown to be as beneficial as surgical intervention are spinal stenosis, meniscus tears, osteoarthritis in knees, and non-traumatic rotator cuff tears to name a few. Typically, your physician will want you to try the most conservative treatment prior to surgery for these reasons. As Physical Therapists, we are experts in improving mobility and restoring motion.
