At Atlantic Physical Therapy Outpatient Occupational Therapy Clinic in Berlin we specialize in Upper & Lower Extremity Lymphedema . Lymphedema is a condition of
localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system, which normally returns interstitial fluid to the bloodstream. Causes of lymphatic dysfunction includes 1) congenital malformation of lymphatics, 2) lymph node removal for cancer treatment, 3) injury to lymphatic vessels due to trauma or infection, 4) venous insufficiency, causing overload of lymphatic vessels.
Atlantic Physical Therapy-Occupational Therapy Lymphedema program includes education, home exercise review, manual lymphatic drainage massage, bandaging, compression garment recommendations and sequential pump usage.
Lymphedema Awareness month is in March. In May of this year my patient with leg swelling received the “Advocate Award” . She has been very instrumental with going before Congress to increase better insurance coverage for individuals with Lymphedema so that they can maintain a healthy and productive life.
Kathy Bates an award winning actress was this year’s spokesperson for the walk (2 miles) to fight Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases. She led
a group of activists on Capital Hill. They met on May 12 th at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , Washington, DC. Great people spreading the word……
