With school starting in a month or so and fall sports season right around the corner I wanted to take a moment to talk about the dangers of single sport specialization in young athletes. Did you know that the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA, and nearly every other major sports organization endorses multi-sport play?
Early specialization greatly increases the risk of overuse injuries in children and adolescents and often leads to burn out, with the athlete often quitting sports altogether. What may be surprising to some of you is that playing only one sport, especially year-round, actually decreases overall athletic development and performance. In fact, early sport diversification is linked to a longer sport career with fewer injuries.
