Outdoor activities are abundant as nice weather returns here on the Eastern Shore. Skateboarding is a popular sport. Skateboarders are recommended to wear standard safety gear. As with any sport, accidents can occur. In 2015 125,145 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms after being injured skateboarding.
Enclosed are pictures of a patient who fell in Ocean City and sustained a wrist fracture. In some situations in which a fracture cannot heal with a cast or splint alone, surgery is required to repair the fracture. As in this case open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery was required to repair the wrist fracture.
“Open reduction” means the surgeon makes an incision to reach the bones and move them back into their normal position. “Internal fixation “ means metal screws, plates, sutures, or rods (hardware) are placed on the bone to keep it in place while it heals. The internal fixation will not be removed (unless at later date issues develop).
After surgery, often patients are referred to outpatient Occupational Therapy services. Rehabilitation focuses on the full restoration of range of motion, strength, and function.
