Exercise Benefits for the Aging Population

In adults, age 75 and older, only 8% meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic activity and strengthening. Studies show that an increase of up to 15 minutes a day of physical activity can correlate to a decrease of an additional 4% in mortality from any cause. Here are just a few benefits of physical activity for individuals 75+:

  • Improved balance, proprioception and coordination
  • Increased blood flow
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Decreased joint pain and improved joint function
  • Increased bone density (weight-bearing exercise)
  • Improved lung capacity
  • Increased cardiovascular function
  • Improved glucose tolerance and insulin function
  • Improved cognition
  • Decrease depression and anxiety

If you have a history of or present conflicting condition, please see your doctor before you begin an exercise routine. If you have a musculoskeletal condition or injury, gait/balance deficits, or a movement disorder ask your doctor for a prescription to Physical Therapy and we can begin an exercise program appropriate for your individual needs.
